Elections board: former Rep Palumbo misreported funds

Peter Palumbo

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Board of Elections is accusing a former state lawmaker of breaking campaign finance laws.

The Providence Journal reports the board referred the allegations against former state Rep. Peter Palumbo to the state Attorney General’s Office.

The Cranston Democrat is accused of misreporting or underreporting tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions and expenditures. The board says he also accepted several illegal campaign contributions between 2010 and 2014.

The board’s director of campaign finance, Richard Thornton, says Palumbo failed to reply to two notices about the concerns in August 2014. In 2015, an attorney for Palumbo sought a potential settlement for his client, but Thornton hasn’t heard from them since last year.

Palumbo’s attorney did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
