PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The mayor of Providence is preparing for his annual state-of-the-city address.
Angel Taveras is scheduled to deliver the remarks on Tuesday evening at City Hall in the City Council chamber.
Taveras is likely to focus on progress his administration has made in stabilizing the city's finances. The first-term Democrat negotiated with unions and retirees a settlement freezing pensions and making other benefits changes. He says the agreements have helped avert a municipal bankruptcy and staved off costly litigation.
The speech will be streamed live on the city's website.
Taveras was sworn in as the city's first Hispanic mayor in 2011.
