The Providence City Council passed a resolution to ban semi automatic firearms on Thursday night.

“They’re really designed for use in the battlefield. They can give off a lot of rounds very quickly and people on the council, the majority of them, thought that they’re really not appropriate for them to be in our homes, our streets and our schools,” said Council Majority Leader Seth Yurdin on the Matt Allen Show.

The resolution comes after Newtown Connecticut School Shooting which left 20 children and six adults dead.

“You can’t ignore the fact that this highly affected instrument, these semi automatic weapons, are playing a big part in what’s happening. They are a very affective way of killing people,” says Yurdin.

According to the Providence Journal, the vote was 8 to 6 with one abstention. The resolution will now go to the General Assembly.
