Rhode Island’s Olivia Culpo has brought the Miss Universe crown back to the United State for the first time in over a decade.
Culpo, a Cranston native, was crowned Miss Universe on Wednesday night during the live televised pageant.
Culpo was one of almost 90 beauty queens to compete for the crown. She is the first Rhode Islander to win the crown and the first contestant from the United States to win since 1997.
Culpo, 20, is a self-described cellist nerd and she is the middle child in a family of five. When asked during the pageant if she ever did anything she regretted she noted that she regretted picking on her siblings as a child, noting she appreciates them more as an adult.
Miss Philippines, Janine Tugonon was first runner up, followed by Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero in third place.
As Miss Universe, Culpo will receive an undisclosed salary and a luxury apartment in New York City.
