PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The wheels are turning to loosen up restrictions on food truck vendors in Providence.

City officials are looking into updating a decades-old ordinance that requires food trucks to abide by the two-hour limit in city parking spots.

The new law would allow food trucks to park in two-hour spots for up to four hours. It would also allow food trucks to park in metered spots as long as they pay.

Food truck owners say they don’t have enough time under the current law to serve customers.

Councilman Bryan Principe, who sponsored the legislation, says the current ordinance doesn’t specifically address food trucks, just hawkers and peddlers.

Principe says food trucks are an important part of the city’s dynamic restaurant scene.

The council votes on the ordinance Thursday.
