Providence police were investigating an overnight heist at a Federal Hill bank branch, where thieves broke into the vault and made off with an unknown amount of cash.
“The bank suffered a loss,” said Providence Police Commander Kevin Lanni on Thursday morning, hours after officers responded to the Santander Bank branch at 280 Atwells Avenue at about 2:00 A.M. He said that it appeared to be a sophisticated, planned heist.
Police responded with long guns and other heavy equipment, but apparently the thief or thieves were gone. Cmdr. Lanni offered no information about possible suspects.
On Thursday morning, a sign taped to the front door said “Branch Temporarily Closed”, directing customers to the nearest branch located at 1025 Smith Street in Providence.
