Providence City Councilwoman Helen Anthony is said to be recovering after being struck by a van while hiking in Northern California on Saturday.

Family members say she is in stable condition, receiving excellent care. Other details were not immediately available.

“Helen is a friend and a colleague,” said Council President Rachel Miller in a statement. “We wish her a speedy recovery.”

“As chair of the Finance Committee, Helen has done incredible work stewarding this year’s budget process. We’ve worked closely on the budget proposal, and her commitment to transparency has been paramount over the last six weeks,” said Miller.

Mayor Brett Smiley tweeted his thoughts.

“We are shocked and saddened to hear of this terrible incident involving Chairwoman Anthony. She is a leader both in the City Council and in our community, which is why I join the City of Providence in wishing her a full and speedy recovery.”

According to her online biography, “Anthony lived in Missouri for ten years prior to moving to Rhode Island. She served on the City Council in Columbia, Missouri as well as on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission.   (She) was also elected to the city council in Needham, Massachusetts.”
