More than 700 people have been charged in the January 6, 2021 riots at the U.S. Capitol, and today, the FBI charged the first Rhode Islander.  

Timothy Desjardins, 35 of Providence was in the news just three weeks ago, Providence Police charged him with holding officers at bay in his Federal Hill barber shop, shutting down Atwells Avenue for a couple of hours November 11.  

In September, police said he shot a man in the face in a confrontation nearby in the Walgreens parking lot.  

In an affidavit in support of an arrest warrant, an FBI agent says Desjardins is seen on publicly available videos and in officers’ body worn cameras, allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers guarding the Capitol, including striking an officer with what appears to be the broken leg of a wooden table.  

Desjardins’ backpack was recovered the next day by Metropolitan Police, containing an identification card, walkie talkies, three axes, prescription bottles and a credit card.  

Desjardins is held at the ACI on the Providence charges, a call to his attorney was not immediately returned. It’s not clear if he has a court date in the federal court in the District of Columbia.
