A man was shot and killed outside his home in the Elmwood section of Providence Friday afternoon, in what police described as a targeted killing, drawing the mayor to the scene to condemn the ongoing violence following the 18th homicide of 2020 in the capital.
“At about 2:30 we were called to the scene here on Lenox Avenue, we had a man who was shot while sitting in his car,” said Providence Police Major David Lapatin. “He was pronounced dead at the scene.” He said the man is believed to be in his 20’s.
“Terrible, terrible shooting,” said Mayor Jorge Elorza.
“I had an opportunity to spend some time with the mother, the father, the family and they’re distraught as you can imagine,” Elorza said.
“You know, the senseless violence we’re seeing throughout the city, it’s just tearing us apart.”
He called on anyone with information to call police.
Police said the early indications are that the victim was targeted, and there was no immediate threat to the public.
“We’re sorry this happened,” said Maj. Lapatin. “It looks like this victim, and probably undeservedly so, was the target. They were here for him and no one else.”
