Police say they have no credible information about violence associated with upcoming marches or rallies in Providence by groups planning to speak out against the police-involved killing in Minneapolis May 25 of a black man, George Floyd.
Four Minneapolis police officers have been charged in Floyd’s death, which has sparked worldwide anger and protests, including a riot Monday night into Tuesday in Providence that left widespread damage to businesses across the city.
“We have no credible information that there is any plan for any rioting or violence as it relates to this demonstration that’s planned for tomorrow,” said Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare late Thursday afternoon.
“We’re expected to escort and provide safety and security for a peaceful assembly where young voices have the opportunity to be heard,” said Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements.
Clements said organizers plan a march from Central High School to the State House.
