Guard attacked by inmate at Rhode Island state prison

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) – A guard in the high security unit of Rhode Island’s state prison has been assaulted by an inmate.

A spokesman for the state prisons department says the correctional officer was assaulted Sunday morning at the Adult Correctional Institution’s high security center.

Department of Corrections spokesman J.R. Ventura says the officer restrained the inmate until other staff arrived to provide backup.

The guard was taken to the hospital, treated for a wound and released. No name was disclosed.

The inmate was identified as David Catalano, who is serving a life sentence.

The assault is under investigation by state police.
