PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A retired Rhode Island State Police major has been sworn in as the department’s newest superintendent.

James Manni was sworn in Friday as the 14th State Police superintendent and director of the state’s Department of Public Safety.

Five retired superintendents attended the State House ceremony, along with many federal, state and local officials and law enforcement officers.

The state Senate unanimously confirmed him Thursday.

Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo nominated Manni to replace Col. Ann Assumpico, who retired.

Manni served in the State Police for 25 years before retiring in 2015. He recently stepped down from his job as town manager of Narragansett.

Manni says he’s committed to ensuring that every trooper is “properly trained, equipped and prepared to provide an unparalleled level of public service and protection.”
