On Tuesday (11/27/18) the Dan Yorke Show was joined by S. Kingstown School District legal council Sara Rapport who explained the details of her 2017 legal opinion relating to now school committee member Sarah Markey. At the time of the opinion, Markey (due to a vacancy) was being considered for appointment to the board. Although she was bypassed for that appointment, Markey was elected to the position this year with the second highest vote tally to claim her seat on the committee.

The issue has reemerged and gained attention prior to the first committee meeting where Markey backed a motion to relieve Rapport’s firm as legal council, which drew ire from a number of residents. The issue laid out in the opinion refers to a potential conflict of interest related to Markey’s employment with NEARI (National Education Association Rhode Island). Now Markey has officially sent an advisory request to the RI Ethics commission (posted below).
