BOSTON (AP) — An off-duty Massachusetts state trooper was involved in a fatal highway crash, faces criminal charges and will be fired, state police said Friday.
Kristopher Carr, 25, of Monson, had been driving on I-93 in Boston at around 1:30 a.m. when he lost control of his SUV, hit the median, and came to a stop perpendicular to the two left lanes.
Carr and a female passenger exited the vehicle but a motorcyclist struck the SUV.
Christopher Zike, 51, of Winthrop, was transported to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries and later pronounced dead. Carr’s 24-year-old female passenger, who police did not identify, also sustained a minor injury.
Carr will be charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. He’ll be arraigned Friday in Dorchester District Court. It’s not immediately clear if he has a lawyer.
State police say Carr was relieved of his duties overnight and will be terminated Friday. Carr graduated from the police academy last week and was a probationary officer assigned to the State Police barracks in Westfield, the agency said.
“His actions, as indicated by the evidence, are in direct violation of the standards of integrity, conduct, and professionalism demanded by the department,” State Police Colonel Christopher Mason said in a statement.
