A Providence man was ordered held on a bail violation in District Court, charged with shooting at a police officer responding to a domestic call.

No plea was entered for Luis Roman, 31 to 16 counts, including assault with intent to murder, domestic assault by strangulation, domestic violence, firearms and other charges.

Judge Terence Houlihan ordered Roman held on a bail violation on prior charges.

Police said Roman fired a rifle at an officer responding to a domestic violence call after 4:00 Wednesday morning on Canton Street off Chalkstone Avenue.

Police believed Roman had barricaded himself inside his home, and advised neighbors to shelter in place for several hours, before tracking him to another home several blocks away at 53 Sears Ave., which Roman gave as his home address in court.

“To me, this is very much out of character for a person that I’ve known for the last four or five years,” said attorney Jeffrey Pine, who represented Roman in court, as well as several years ago in a previous case.

“He’s been doing well lately with a family and a job,” said Pine, a former state Attorney General.

“I’m very happy that nobody was injured, that nobody was killed. We all thank God for that,” Pine said outside court.
