Central Falls is one Rhode Island city with a new leader, and she is the first Latina mayor in the Ocean State.

Maria Rivera took the oath of office in an online-only ceremony Monday, along with members of the Central Falls City Council, saying she “proudly accepts the challenge, to lead our city to its highest potential”.

Rivera listed a litany of needs in one of the state’s poorest cities, from more covid testing, support for small businesses, housing, policing, schools, programs for youth and seniors, and a more accessible, transparent city government.

“I know this won’t be easy, but I’m ready,” she said, adding, “my vision for the city involves every single person here and those watching.”

“This work is our work. This city is our city. The future is our future,” Rivera said.
