A body of a man was found Monday afternoon in a Providence park, and police, in the early stages of their investigation, were treating the death as a homicide.
The body was found near F.C. Greene Memorial Boulevard, which rings the eastern edge of Roger Williams Park, just north of Wheeler Avenue, which is in neighboring Cranston.
“He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he later died from wounds,” said Providence Police Detective Commander Major David Lapatin, who did not further characterize the nature of his wounds. He said police were treating the case as a homicide.
Police were conducting an extensive search of the area, which neighbors described as generally quiet.
“We’re sorting it out,” said Maj. Lapatin. “But it will take some time.”
If the death turns out to be a homicide, it would be the seventh of the year in Providence. A shooting early Sunday claimed the life of Delron Fields, 35 of Providence. He was killed in the parking lot of the Dunkin’ on Broad Street at about 12:10 A.M.
