Providence police officer charged with assault

A 17-year veteran Providence police officer was charged with simple assault and suspended with pay pending an internal investigation into an incident April 19 on Knight Street on Federal Hill.

In a statement, police said Sergeant Joseph Hanley struck a handcuffed suspect while he was being arrested.

The sergeant’s arrest followed a review by Providence Police and the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office.

He was released for a future court date.
