Perennial political candidate, pro-life campaigner and frequent talk show caller Christopher Young died Tuesday night in a rollover crash, soon after he and his wife and young daughter testified at the State House before a legislative committee.

Young, 51 of Narragansett died at about 8:40 P.M. when his car veered off Route 95 south just south of the Route 37 off-ramp in Cranston, rolled over in the shoulder, according to a statement from the Rhode Island State Police. He was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital, his wife and daughter were also transported for evaluation of injuries that were described as minor.

Young, his wife Kara and their four-year old daughter appeared earlier in the evening before the House Judiciary Committee, testifying on behalf of a resolution that would recognize the fetus as a human life upon the existence of a heartbeat.

“The baby in the womb has human rights. The baby in the womb has a heartbeat at 22 days. The baby in the womb is a human being,” Young testified. There was no vote, and the resolution was held for further study.

“I can’t believe I am writing this. I can’t believe this has happened,” Kara Young said in a Facebook post. “But my husband, Chris Young, passed away last night. It was a medical event that happened while he was driving on the highway (most likely a heart attack), when we were coming home after we all testified in favor of the Fetal Heartbeat Bill at the Rhode Island Statehouse.”

“I believe that his consistent passion, commitment, and bravery ultimately took a toll on HIS heart,” she said.

“Words really cannot express our grief. We love him with all our heart. Please please please offer many many prayers.”
