PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A high-ranking officer is retiring from the Rhode Island State Police.

WPRI-TV reports Col. James Manni said Monday that Lt. Col. Joseph Philbin, the third in command, submitted a request to retire. Manni, the State Police superintendent, didn’t elaborate.

Manni says he’s not permitted under state law to make any public statement in connection to the status of any Internal Affairs investigation.

Manni previously asked the Connecticut State Police to review an incident involving a member of the State Police command staff, which occurred before he began leading the agency in December.

Manni wouldn’t say if that review is the same Internal Affairs investigation he referenced on Monday.

Philbin told The Providence Journal he was leaving in “good standing” and his departure had nothing to do with that ongoing investigation.
