PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Narragansett Indian Tribe says it won’t abide by an agreement to be a backup water source for a proposed natural gas-fired power plant in Burrillville, Rhode Island.
The Providence Journal reports the state Energy Facility Siting Board was notified of the termination Monday.
Chicago-based developer Invenergy said this fall that the Narragansett Indian Tribe would be a backup water source to cool the facility.
The tribal land is part of the lower Wood River aquifer in the Pawcatuck Watershed. That aquifer is shared with Charlestown, where there’s opposition to the plant.
Invenergy says the tribe’s decision won’t impact the water supply plan because it has another backup agreement in place with a water trucking company, Benn Water and Heavy Transport. That company has a contract with Fall River, Massachusetts.
