INTERVIEW: AGT finalist Piff the Magic Dragon coming to the Comedy Connection

by Frank O’Donnell

How would one best describe Piff the Magic Dragon? The season 10 finalist from “America’s Got Talent” wears a dragon suit, works with a Chihuahua and performs magic. He’ll be appearing at the Comedy Connection in East Providence this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

His website describes him as “Larry David in a dragon suit” doing magic. I wonder if that’s his thumbnail way to describe himself.

“No, that’s pretty much all there is to it,” he answered via email.

So let’s begin, shall we? How did he get started on the path to where he is today? “I hatched out the egg holding the ace of spades,” he said. “It was the wrong card, but a start nonetheless.”

So when was the dragon suit added to his repertoire? “Suit? I’m a genuine magical dragon. I’m naked.”

How about Mr. Piffles, the Chihuahua that’s described as Piff’s gimmick? “A dragon doing magic isn’t enough?” he wonders. “I’m just giving the people what they want.”

Okay, so he’s a dragon. So how does he feel about the recent loss of one of Dany’s dragons in “Game of Thrones?” Oops, forgot to write “spoiler alert.”

“Guys, what’s better than a white walker dragon? That’s right. A poor misunderstood magic dragon.”

I wonder if he perhaps sees himself as misunderstood. “If I am misunderstood, it’s all down to my native Las Vegan accent.”

How often is he working in comedy clubs? “Piffles and I spend half our week in Vegas and the other half touring all over North America.”

What does Piff do in his spare time? He golfs. “Dragons love golfing. And kidnapping princesses.”

“America’s Got Talent” was undoubtedly Piff’s springboard to fame. So what’s his best recollection about his time spent on the show. “Snacks. Kissing Heidi. Wonderful snacks.”

And the worst part? “Sugar crash and herpes.”
