PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Johnson and Wales University is set to open the first completed building on the acres of downtown Providence land made available by moving Interstate 195.

The university said it will host a ribbon cutting September 1 for its John J. Bowen Center for Science and Innovation. The new building will house the university’s School of Engineering and Design and its biology program.

Governor Gina Raimondo and Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, both Democrats, are scheduled attend the dedication with university officials.

Johnson and Wales is a private university with more than 15,000 students on four campuses: Providence, Rhode Island; North Miami, Florida; Denver, Colorado and Charlotte, North Carolina.
