PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A fire captain is in critical condition after battling a fire near Providence College.
Providence firefighters were called to Eaton Street on Thursday evening to fight flames that had spread through a three-story home and spread to neighboring buildings.
Several firefighters were injured in the blaze. He was taken to Roger Williams Medical Center in serious condition and transferred to Rhode Island Hospital.
Paul Doughty, president of the firefighters’ union, says the veteran firefighter in his 50s was taken to the hospital with injuries that aren’t life-threatening.
The other firefighters’ injuries are not considered serious.
A Providence College spokeswoman told WPRI-TV that 19 students from the university were displaced as a result of the fire.
