Chalk this one up in the ‘random’ category of news stories. Swiftkey, the maker of the popular emoji smartphone app, has revealed which is the most popular emoji used in each of the fifty states.
If you don’t know what an emoji is, you’ve probably seen them. They are the little cartoon images you can attach to your text messages on Apple or Android smartphones.

Swiftkey decided to catalog over a billion text messages and determine which was the most popular image used in each state; and Rhode Island’s selection is… interesting to say the least.
According to app developer, the icon depicting a tan open-toed heel was the most used emoji in RI, along with the fireball, bomb, flower bouquet, and golf images.
The seemingly random assortment of images certainly is baffling, but other writers on the internet find the tan heel icon to be completely devoid of reason.
“Why is that coming up in conversation so often? Did a freak accident cause an Ann Taylor Loft truck to spill thousands of weird tan heels into the streets of Rhode Island?” writes Lucy Meilus of Thrillest.com.
“Please let us know, we are concerned.”
While we at WPRO are not too concerned (the fireball and bomb image should be more concerning, right?), we certainly are curious. Why do you think the tan heel icon is so popular in the Ocean State?
