Rhode Island’s ranking Catholic, Bishop Thomas Tobin, says Democrat Gina Raimondo has no one to blame but herself for La Salle removing her portrait from a wall of notable graduates.
“Gina Raimondo, in a sense, when she distanced herself from the church, when she chose Planned Parenthood over the church, she took her own picture off the wall,” Tobin told WPRO’s Dan Yorke.
Raimondo drew fire from critics like Tobin when she accepted an endorsement from Planned Parenthood last week and pledged to overturn a law which bans partial birth abortion.
“I think what was stunning to me, and to many others around the state, was the very extreme position about abortion that she presented last week, and the rather aggressive, angry, defiant way in which she expressed it,” said Tobin.
“You can’t get much more extreme than supporting partial birth abortion,” continued Tobin.
The bishop said partial-birth abortion is a procedure which borders on infanticide.
Tobin said he tries not to get involved in political campaigns, but stated his role as Bishop is to bring the teachings of the church to bear on topics such as abortion.
He also added that the door is always open for Raimondo to come and speak to him about her position
