Forty recruits began the Rhode Island State Police Training Academy Monday.
The class, the largest in State Police history, is made up of 35 men and 5 women. The forty recruits were selected from a pool of 1,666.
“You were the best of the best, you should congratulate yourself on being here,” Col. Steven O’Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police, told the student troopers Monday. “You will never, and I repeat that, never, experience anything like this in your life.”
In order to join the academy, the recruits had to pass a written examination, physical agility test, oral board interview, extensive background investigation, and psychological and medical examinations.
“You’re in pursuit of one of the best careers anyone could ever experience, and that’s a career in law enforcement, “ said Attorney General Peter Kilmartin., who helped to welcome the student troopers Monday at State Police Training Academy.
Over the course of their twenty-two week, para-military training, the student troopers will be rigorously tested academically and physically.
