A Providence public school teacher, Jane O'Connell of Charlestown, had been placed on adminsitrative leave following her arrest in North Kingstown this weekend.  O'Connell is a teacher at the Gilbert Stuart Middle School.

The Providence Public School District told WPRO Monday afternoon that O'Connell has been put on paid administrative leave following her arrest. They issued the following statement:

"We learned today that one of our middle school teachers was arrested and will face charges in an incident that occurred over the weekend. While the incident in no way involved or impacted students, all who work in our schools and district must be held to a high standard as trusted adults in our students’ lives. To this end, the teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation and hearing."

The incident involving O'Donnell occurred on Saturday night. According to a police report by North Kingstown Patrol Officer J. Dylan Navakauskas, O'Donnell was arrested and charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstructing an officer at Seven Moons restaurant on Post Road.

O'Connell became belligerent when Navakauskas responded to a call that there was an injured person at the restaurant. Navakauskas said in the report that  O'Connell smelled strongly of alcohol at the time.

According to the report, two patrons called 911 to report that an intoxicated person had fallen off a bar stool at the restaurant. When Officer Navakauskas reported, he encountered O'Connell in the bar. O’Connell began asking the officer what he wanted and started using profanities.

Navakauskus soon determined that the person who had fallen off the bar stool was O'Connell's friend, who was sitting close by at the bar. The report says that O'Connell prevented Navakauskas from approaching her friend by yelling obscenities at him. When Navakauskas attempted to escort O’Connell out of the bar to allow rescue personnel to reach her intoxicated friend, O'Connell became more and more belligerent.

The report says that as Navakauskus began escorting O'Connell out of the bar, she said, "[explitive] you, my brother's a cop," and "my brother's a [expletive] sheriff, your (sic) so [expletive]."

At that time, Navakauskas placed O'Connell under arrest for Disorderly Conduct.

Once handcuffed, the report says that O'Connell became physically combative, kicking her legs and striking Navakauskas and another officer who reported to the scene. Navakauskas reports that O'Connell screamed, "I'm a [expletive] teacher, you idiots" and then later said, "I'm gonna (sic) kill all you cops."

"She was repeatedly saying that she was a teacher in Providence," North Kingston PoliceSergeant Eli Mulligan told WPRO Monday.

Once back at the station, O'Connell remained uncooperative and struggled with an officer, causing him to strike his head on concrete and sustain a concussion. A friend arrived to provide O'Connell with bail, but she refused to accept it, answering the officers only with profanities.

"Through the entire booking process she remaimed extremely uncooperative and belligerent, which included kicking at officers," said Mulligan.

Eventually, Navakauskas and another officer were able to get O'Connell to cooperate for processing, at which time the report states that O'Connell said, "Let's hurry this up, or else." When asked what she meant, the report says O'Connell said, "Have you ever heard of the Asian Boyz."

After processing, the same friend that attempted to provide bail earlier in the night returned again and O'Connell was released on $5,000 personal recognizance.
