A woman has been hit by a bus as she was crossing a Providence street.

Barbara Polichetti, a spokeswoman for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, told WPRO the accident happened around 8:40 a.m. Monday in the city’s Wayland Square neighborhood.

She said the bus was turning left at an intersection when it hit the 56-year-old woman.

“The woman was apparently crossing on foot and making her way from the north side of the road to the south,” said Polichetti.

The spokeswoman says she did not immediately know the extent of the woman’s injuries.

“We’re going to be working in concert with the Providence Police, they’re conducting an investigation and we’ll be assisting them with that.”

The woman was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital. The bus driver has worked for RIPTA since 1993.

A RIPTA bus struck and killed a federal court security officer as he crossed a street in May.
